- The Elements
- of a Server
- New Century Schlbk
- #Chapter 5: The Elements of a Server
- JThe elements of a server are the building blocks you use to construct your
- server. These elements include:
- Message forums
- File libraries
- Multi-user conferences
- =Internode abilities, including sending bulletins and chatting
- External applications
- Voting topics
- Subscriptions and newscans
- 5Electronic mail abilities, including sending and read
- ing both
- regular and file-attached mail.
- 7Peform document search and retrieval using AppleSearch
- BTelnet out to internet hosts to use a variety of internet services
- <Other choices including changing terminal settings, changing
- 8password, jumping to other choices and listing accounts.
- IThis chapter describes each choice in turn, how each choice works and how
- Jyou can edit its function. This chapter describes the text-based or VT-100
- Linterface to these functions. For information on the NovaTerm interface, see

- Message forums
- message forum
- )N6 is an area on your server where users can post public
- ?Jmessages (messages that can be read by anyone allowed to enter the message
- Fforum). You can use message forums as forums for discussing everything
- *from political debate to for-sale notices.
-
- )P
- )P
- )P
-
- Message forum access levels
- ;For message forums, there are two types of access levels al
- N lowed: a
- ?Iaccess that governs whether an account can enter the message forum, and a
- write
- D access that determines whether an account can add his own messages.
- ?MFor instance it is possible to create a
- read-only
- message forum, useful for
- %general announcements, where every ac
- $count can read the messages but only
- a Sysop can add mes
- )_5sages. To do this you would have to change the access
- levels of the message forum:
- <|f<b
- FffF`

- >f>>`
- Q)4PDD
- A5@DA
- DLvw2
- S $!%$
- IJRIJP
- JRIJL
- )JRIJB
- )2NI1
- FThe Read Level specifies who may be allowed to enter the message forum
- Dwhile the Write Level specifies who may be allowed to post their own
- Imessages. The Access Group specifies whether members of a specified group
- Mshould be allowed access, whether they have the necessary read access or not.
- Moderators
- HThe Moderator Group specifies an individual or group that has Sysop-like
- Pabilities (delete posts and release files) for this message forum only. To add a
- Jmoderator you can either type in the name of the account or group, or drag
- Jthe account or group from either the Accounts list or Group list window. A
- 9moderator always has read and write access for his forum.
- New Century Schlbk
- #Chapter 5: The Elements of a Server
- JThe Purge after setting specifies how long a message should be kept before
- GNLP deletes it. A value of zero indicates that messages should never be
- automatically deleted.
- KThe Use Threaded Style settings specifies whether messages
- replies will be
- Gstored as threads or in a flat (non-hierarchical) format. The Send Post
- LBulletins has NLP alert all on-line callers when a message is posted in this
- Dmessage forum. The Allow Anonymous posts settings determines whether
- Hposters can post messages without recording their identity. The List New
- HFirst checkbox determines whether NLP will list the messages in older-to
- 2newer order, or the reverse, for NovaTerm callers.

- Message forum structure
- +A message forum structures its messages in
- threads
- , that is, there
- Cis a parent message with a chain of responses after it. This format
- Bmore closely mirrors the usual type of traffic in a message forum.
- <Since several exchanges may be going on at once, this format
- divides them conceptually:
- Courier
- Message 1
- )r Message 2
- )s Message 3
- Reply to
- Message 1
- A second
- reply to
- Message 2
- Reply to
- Message 2
- DA regular message forum divides messages into streams or threads, so
- Lmessages relating to a particular subject can easily be grouped together. In
- @the diagram above, message 1 has one response, Message 2 has two
- !responses and Message 3 has none.
- New Century Schlbk

- (parent) message.
- @New messages (or messages with new responses) are marked with an
- Masterisk. These are the messages that a newscan will automatically select for
- reading.
- DSince a message forum can receive dozens of messages a day, NovaLink
- EProfessional keeps only the time of your last visit when performing a
- Hnewscan. This means that if you visit a message forum, and leave without
- Gactually reading all the new messages, all the messages are nonetheless
- marked as old.

- Posting a

- 7new thread. To add a message to an existing thread, the
- New Century Schlbk
- #Chapter 5: The Elements of a Server
- user types
- Courier

- "fashion will be added to a thread.

- Attaching a file
- )c9A message can have a file associated with it. To attach a
- 3file in VT100 terminal emulation. a caller types .F
- D(period F) in the Line Editor when composing the message text. After
- Kcomposing the text, the caller will have to upload the file. The Sysop must

- the file before any one else can download it. Subsequent
- Hreaders of that message will then be able to download the attached file.
- Editing message

- File libraries
- BFile libraries are repositories into which files (applications and
- ?documents) can be deposited and retrieved. Each file library is
- Busually devoted to a single topic, such as clip art, music, games,
- Dutilities and so forth. It is also possible to attach a CD-ROM drive

- File transfers
- <In order to understand file libraries, it is important to un
- derstand file
- transfers.
- MInformation servers are particularly useful for transferring files (documents
- Fand applications) between the host computer and the caller
- s computer.
- 8Transferring a file from the host to a user is called a
- download
- ; transferring
- 0a file from the user to the server is called an
- upload
- 5There are six ways your NovaLink Professional informa
- tion server can start
- a file transfer:
- From a file library
- =From a download file choice installed somewhere on the server
- ?From a message forum (a message can have a file attached to it)
- (From a send document or read mail choice
- By executing a script with an

- #Using the Remote Operator interface
- JBefore transferring a file, NovaLink Professional and the terminal program

- Protocol:
- *-GA protocol determines how the file will be transmitted in an error-free
- .fashion. NovaLink Professional supports two ba
- sic types of file transfer
- ?/protocols for VT100 callers: XMODEM and ZMODEM.
- MXMODEM is one of the original file transfer protocols for personal computers.
- NIt is simple, robust and ubiquitous. It has two variations, the original and a
- faster 1024 byte block ver
- sion.
- ?CZMODEM is a faster and more modern protocol that has the ability to
- Kresume a transfer that was interrupted for whatever reason. This feature is
- ?especially handy for large transfers and long-distance callers.
- Helvetica
- Batch downloads
- NBatch downloads allow a caller to download several files in a single transfer.
- EOnly terminal programs that support ZMODEM file transfer protocol can
- take advantage of this feature.
- OTo use batch downloads a user simply has to type A to add a file to his list of
- Lfiles. On the last file, the user selects
- and the batch download begins.
- IAlternately, a
- command in a file library immediately begins the batch
- transfer.
- +Here is a summary of standard library keys:

- Listing files

- B command operates exactly like the List command, except only those
- ,files uploaded since your last visit will ap

- Release
- )*> file command, accessible only to Sysops and moderators of the
- Jrent section, will make the file public to all users. When a file is first
- Quploaded, it is put in a private section for the Sysop to examine it before it is
- (made public. If the server setting (see
- Editing Server Settings

- Release
- command is applied to

- Uploading files
- )c5When you wish to upload a file, NovaLink Professional
- 9asks you to name the file, to type in a short description
- 0for it (76 characters), and to type in a long de
- scription for it (using the Line
- 9Editor), before you start sending the file to the server.
- AOrdinarily, users will send their files to your server with their
- Ntelecommunication program. If you wish to upload a file locally, you will have
- 0to give a pathname, or, if the file is in the li
- brary folder, you need only give
- its name.
- New Century Schlbk

- uDIf you are operating a public server, you should always check a file

- Fuploads. Remember that you will be legally liable if pirated files are
- available on your server.
- Downloading

- IMass uploading is especially handy when you are setting up your server or

- formation.
- GChoice K lets you exempt downloads from this library from counting in a
- Ncaller
- s total download. The call/post ratio specifies the ratio the user must
- Kmaintain in order to download from this library. For instance, a value of 3
- Pwould indicate that a caller must post, on average, every third call in order to
- Qdownload from this library. A value of zero indicates that no call/post ratio is
- Gnecessary. The Upload access level specifies the minimum access level a
- Ncaller must have to upload a file. Enforce download limits specifies whether a

- library.
- NChoice S lets you add or remove Moderators for this library. Choice T lets you
- Qspecify a maximum size for all the files in the library. For instance, if you set
- Hthe maximum size to 1024K (one megabyte), NovaLink Professional will not
- Oallow any more uploads if the combined size of all files in the library exceeds
- 1024K.
- Helvetica
- Self-maintaining
- libraries
- 7The most important choice in creating a file library is
- #whether you want the library to be
- self-maintaining
- 7A self-maintaining library always reflects the contents
- Oof a specified folder on a Macintosh hard drive. For instance, you could create
- (a library called
- New files
- and a corre
- !sponding folder on your hard disk
- Gcalled
- New arrivals
- and have the listings of New Files library always
- Lcorrespond exactly to the contents of the New Arrivals folder
- s contents. If
- Pyou add files to the New Arrivals folder they will appear in the library, if you
- Nremove files from the folder, they are automatically deleted from the library.
- CD-ROM libraries
- )c3If you have a CD-ROM drive, you can purchase any of
- 3eral CD-ROM disks specifically designed to run with
- infor
- Cmation servers. These disks contain thousands of already compressed
- *public domain files ready for downloading.
- New Century Schlbk
- File libraries
- ?MSince a CD-ROM is a read-only device, a library that has file listings from a
- ACD-ROM must be designated as read-only. This prevents anyone from
- Juploading a file to a CD-ROM library, and it tells NLP not to keep newscan
- informa
- )$<tion for such a library since its contents can never change.
- ?LNovaLink Professional will also ask you for a folder name to place the files
- Hinto on your disk. If you wish to keep them in the NLP Files folder, sim
- press the Return key.
- Helvetica
- Using picture previews
- INovaLink Pro lets you attach a picture preview (for NovaTerm callers) for
- Iany file in a file library. If the file is a PICT file, NLP automatically
- generates a picture preview.
- NIf the file in the library is an archive created with Compactor
- or StuffIt
- INLP looks for a PICT resource of ID 128 inside the archive. NLP uses this
- Lpicture as the preview. This picture ideally should be 85 by 115 pixels, but
- 0NLP will scale the image if it is not this size.
- PIf you wish to create picture previews for other kinds of files, you must follow
- Ma different method. First you need to create a file in the NLP File Libraries
- Kfolder. The name of this file must match the file library
- s name and have a
- .PICT
- extension. For instance, if you have library named
- Fruit
- you would
- Icreate a file called
- Fruit.PICT
- in the NLP File Libraries folder. Next,
- Lsuppose you have a file called Apple in this library. With ResEdit you would
- Hinsert a PICT resource named
- Apple
- into the
- Fruit.PICT
- file. Now you
- 3have created a picture preview for your Apple file.

- Multi-user conferences
- CNovaLink Professional lets you install conferences in which several

- BNote that you can install as many conferences as you like, but for
- Installing a

- 8most setups one or two conferences is all you will need.
- 2Conversations being held in one conference are com

- Entering a

- 1Callers enter a conference just as they would any
- 6choice. VT-100 and NovaTerm callers will see a display
- like the fol
- lowing:

- HHigh speed modem users should set this value to 38,400 and turn hardware

- higher than 9600.
- Helvetica
- About hardware handshaking
- )c'You must first determine if you have a
- hardware
- handshaking
- )D$ cable. A hardware handshaking cable
- ?Epermits the Macintosh to talk to the modem at a faster rate than your
- Hmodem talks to the other modem. This ability lets the modem compress the
- Mdata, and thus send it faster. Since the Mac is talking faster than the modem
- Lis operating, the modem must be able to signal to the Mac to stop and resume
- Mdata transfer, in order that no data is lost. A hardware handshaking cable is
- Irequired so that these signals will be properly conveyed to the computer.
- HThe speed should be the maximum speed of your modem, provided you have a
- Ehardware handshaking cable. If you do not have a hardware handshaking
- @cable (or if your modem is a 2400 bps model without MNP or other
- Ccompression) then the maximum speed must be the speed at which your
- modem talks to the other modem.
